viii, pp 242. Minor worm damage. Original roan boards, later re-spined in matching colour. 35th edition. Possibly lacks last leaf, but unable to confirm. First published in 1611, Bayly's work relates how a pious man may live happily, compared with a man not reconciled to Christ. The book influenced puritan thinking (particularly John Bunyan), includes prayers and meditations for the practicing believer, and is largely based on early sermons given by Bayly. Lewis Bayly (?1675-1731) was Chaplain to Henry, Prince of Wales (d. 1612), to whom the book is dedicated, and later Chaplain to James I who appointed him Bishop of Bangor. The Practice of Piety is his most famous work. Good copy of a very influential 17th C work.
