Local Description

pp. [10], 424, [6 - booklist], frontispiece engraving of the author. Contemporary half panelled calf, front joint particularly showing wear, but holding. Early hand-writing on front end paper. Whichcot (1609-1683) was sometime Provost of King's College Cambridge and a leader of the Cambridge Platonists, backing tolerance and a view of man as a 'child of reason'. The Discourses were published posthumously in 1701, and, according to the hand-written note on the front end paper, resulted from shorthand notes taken during his sermons. They cover "The Shortness of Human Charity, The Perfection of the Mercy of God, etc ."  Good copy of the first edition, rarely seen outside institutional libraries.
