Ivstini Historiarum ex Trogo Pompeio lib. XLIV. : cum notis Isaaci Vossii
pp. [12], 310, 36, [50]. Engraved illustrated title page by C.C. Duysend. 18th Century full roan. Ink quotation on front free endpaper. Justinus was a 2nd C Roman writer who used the work of Gnaeus Pompeius Trogos, writing in the time of Augustus, on the history of the Macedonian empire (Philippic Histories) to compile his own work on Greek history. He admits to extracting, modifying and adding to pieces from Trogos - it is far from an epitome of the early work. The work was much used in the Middle Ages and continued to be published through the 17th C. The present volume published by Elsevir in 1640 contains additional notes from the eminent Dutch scholar Isaac Vossius, a book collector and writer, who, after a colourful career, particularly with Queen Christina of Sweden, ended up in England as a Fellow of the Royal Society, dying at Windsor. A very good copy complete with the extraordinary title page.
