Description

The author's forebears arrived in NZ in 1840, among the earlier settlers, and using family records, recollections and diaries she has reconstructed the family story up to 1940. Her great-grandfather, Thomas Drake, his wife Selina and infant daughter Ceres began the NZ family dynesty. They arrived aboard the New Zealand Company ship Aurora, the first of the company's five ship fleet carrying immigrants and supplies to reach at Wellinton in January 1840. This is a well told, informative and often gripping history of how the early settlers adapted to the new and strange country, the problems they faced and overcame. The story then expands through successive family generations, tracing the development of the country over the next 100 years as experienced by the different branches. A history in microcosm of NZ's first century of European settlement. A high quality privately published book. 264 pages, 137 b/w illustrations art and photos.
